YOGA PHILOSOPHY:
An Introductory Workshop
Presented by Shari Goodhartz. ERYT-500

THS WORKSHOP IS NOT BEING HELD AT YOGA AT THE VILLAGE.
THE CLASS LOCATION IS:
Right On Programs Inc., 522 E Broadway #101, Glendale, CA 91205 (818) 240-1683

One of the main texts of yogic philosophy is a series of short phrases (the word sutra means “thread”) originally passed down orally from teacher to student, one-on-one, for untold thousands of years.  Each thread was packed with information that the student and teacher would unfold and discuss to reveal their deepest meaning, in a quest to understand the nature of suffering and eventually to overcome it.  Only one sutra deals with the postures that we do in yoga classes, the rest have to do with the workings of consciousness itself, which is the ultimate issue of yoga practice.

This workshop will present multiple translations of a few, select sutras, since the translator’s perspective greatly influences the “spin” on the text.  By comparing different translations, we can assess for ourselves what the deeper meaning of the sutras might be.

Iyengar Introspective
An Introduction to Philosophy and Alignment
with Scott Hobbs

Sunday, February 21, 2010
1:00-4:00pm

*TEACHERS:  Earn 3 continuing education units toward your Yoga Alliance renewal.

The practice of Iyengar yoga focuses on proper body alignment which allows the body to develop harmoniously in an anatomically correct way, as well as guiding the mind into the proper channels
to make the body a fit vehicle for meditation. Because all bodies have different weaknesses and strengths, Iyengar Yoga applies the use of props (wooden blocks, chairs, blankets and belts)
to help the body into the correct positions so that one can work in a range of motion
that is both safe and effective.

Ayurvedic Medicine: The Science of Life
An Introduction and Guide to Health

with Guy Gabriel, ERYT

Saturday, March 6, 2010

IMPORTANT INFO!
THIS WORKSHOP IS NOT BEING HELD AT YOGA AT THE VILLAGE.
THE CLASS LOCATION IS:

Padre, Inc., 401 S. Glenoaks Blvd. (at Verdugo), Burbank 91502, 818-843-7375

Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means, the science or wisdom of life. Originated in India more then 5000 years ago, Ayurveda is an ancient philosophy based on a deep understanding of eternal truths about the human body, mind and spirit.  It stems from the ancient vedic culture and was taught for thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples.

Understanding the fundamentals of the tri dosha is tantamount to understanding Ayurvedic wisdom. Ayurveda identifies three types of energy or functional principles that are present in everyone and everything. We will focus on: Vata, the energy of movement; Pitta, the energy of digestion or metabolism and Kapha, the energy of lubrication and structure. A self-test will be handed out to take home to understand how these doshas manifest in us. As students of Ayurveda, we need to study and memorize but also contemplate and meditate.

Viniyoga or Yoga as TKV Desikachar wishes that the discipline be called, is rooted in the principles taught to him by his father, Sri T. Krishnamacarya. Krishnamacarya was also the teacher of well known contemporary Yoga masters B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois and Indra Devi.

ASHTANGA YOGA INTROSPECTIVE
with Nancy Goodstein

Sunday, March 28, 2010
1:00-4:00pm

TEACHERS:  Earn 3 continuing education units toward your Yoga Alliance renewal.

Ashtanga yoga, as taught to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois by his teacher, and as he passes down to us is a set system of poses linked by movement and breath. Power Yoga is said to be based on it, and while both are physically demanding, Ashtanga in it's true form is hugely different. Ashtanga has a scientific design, which is malleable to include those of all physical abilities, and that is structured to help the practitioner not only achieve fitness and health of the body, but stillness and well being of the mind.  In this workshop, safety of the body and stillness of the mind will be used as a means of attaining the poses, and considered of higher importance.
