Continuing Education Workshop
Series* for teachers or students interested in deepening their practice.
Sanskrit is the original
language of yoga, and though there are few people in the world who
speak it conversationally, it’s one of the most amazing languages ever
developed, because pretty much all of it was intentional. It’s also a
perfect vehicle for spiritual texts (the word Sanskrit means
"perfected"),
since most words have multiple meanings that are open to interpretation
based on
both context and personal experience.

In this introductory
workshop, you’ll learn how Sanskrit is based on the way sounds are made by
the human vocal apparatus, practice saying all of these sounds accurately,
visit the simple syllabary (the 44 main symbols, which isn’t exactly an
alphabet), view academic transliteration (the dots and dashes seen here,
called diacritical marks), and try your hand at writing it all for
yourself. You may even leave being able to write your own name in
Devanagari (the symbol system most popular here in the West,
and that’s still used in India for Hindi).
